When I pictured becoming a mother, I imagined reading books in the chair before naptime and bedtime, and me kissing their sweet foreheads before they snuggled in to sleep. I considered the possibility of playdates in the park and all the mom friends with which to share the latest milestones and outgrown clothes. I dreamed of quiet summer days and picnics under our big oak tree, with the baby sleeping in the basket next to me while the others played in the yard. I thought I would be that smiling, gentle mother who loves to play and kiss boo-boos. And then I had kids. Now it’s not to say that it doesn’t have its shining moments, but motherhood came at me like a ton of bricks and has been anything but what I pictured.
