This week I want to talk about Christmas icons. These are the symbols that each of us choose from to signal another holiday season. One of the most physical acknowledgements of the season of Christmas are the lights. Simple or extravagant, lights are a signal to many that it is Christmas. Last Christmas was muted by the Covid pandemic. The lights even seemed different, however I think that was because we had so little snow. Dead grass or barren trees don’t reflect the light as well as snow. Even though the snow was late to arrive this year, it is here now and should reflect Christmas lights very well.

Nothing brightens up a cold winter day like a blooming amaryllis bulb (Hippeastrum sp.)! Above the strappy foliage, the flower stalk can stretch over two feet high, topped with a stunning display of huge, trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and even orange – with some gorgeous striped varieties available as well.
