Of Smoothies and Kayaks

I wanted a kayak. It was a simple request I repeated repeatedly. I talked about how we would go kayaking this summer on the lake. We’d have a blast making family memories while building our triceps and getting a tan. I communicated as clearly as I could, in English, which is the language they speak. I wanted a kayak.

Lisa and I saw a movie this past weekend called “Father Stu.” The story follows Stuart Long, a boxer whose career ends with a repeated injury. Long moves to Hollywood to become an actor. While in Los Angeles, he meets a Sunday school teacher who is not interested in him. He attends church to impress her, eventually suffering severe injuries in a motorcycle accident that leads him to believe he should be a priest. Suffering is a central theme to this movie. Stu Long suffers from his own irresponsible, self-destructive actions and the results of poor relationship with his distant father. His father leans on alcohol to deal with his own pain and his mother insulates herself from her own suffering by distancing herself emotionally. Long eventually embraces his suffering as an opportunity to know God. He explains this to some degree by comparing humans to Jesus himself in saying that “we are spiritual beings going through a human experience.”

This past weekend, another project ended, well almost. There are so many steps to a project that you become a pretty good dancer by the time one is finished. This one was a full winter project, performed in three stages. It was always winter around me, except for the warm space in the middle of the shop where the heat collects, which is where I worked on my project.I have discussed the cupola project already. but never with much detail. This is the second cupola I have built and this one was big. Big enough that I plan to build a sub-structure to brace the roof before it is installed. The bracing project will take a little time to construct, as well. The cupola itself is a mixture of red and white metal with a few red accents on the white portion. My inspiration for the red accents was that I had a little red metal left, so there you go.

A few decades ago, I had made plans to follow a dream. It was to return to radio broadcasting. I had worked about four years in broadcasting prior to starting almost 31 years for Sheriff’s Offices in Pennington and Marshall County. I even had an approximate date when I would accomplish this goal. I have been the News Director for KTRF for about 2 ½ years and did a variety of work at KTRF prior to becoming their News Director.
