Prudence Velma Nystuen

Prudence Velma Nystuen passed away in Minneapolis on July 3 at age 93.

She was born in Newfolden on September 25, 1925, to Sam and Mae Lee. Her father was an early day grocer in Amundson and Lee of Newfolden.

Known by the name Velma in her school days, she graduated from Newfolden High School in 1943. Remembered for her piano playing, she was a chrch pianist/organist for almost 60 years.

She attended Augsburg College but left school early to marry Herbert Hokanson, who also left school to take over the family farm near Waseca upon the accidental deaths of his brother and his wife, leaving a young daughter. Counting her, they had four children.

Later, upon Herb’s death, she married David Nystuen, whom she met on a trip to Israel. Prudence is survived by David, three daughters, one son, two step daughters and one step son, one sister, Ivey Hakes of Arizona, now 100, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, a brother, Sherman, and sisters Olive Lindquist, Marie Olsen and Marguerite Person.

Area cousins of Prudence are Katherine Knutson, Thief River Falls, and Valborg and Raynard Huglen, Newfolden.
