He attended country school through the eighth grade. Floyd then stayed home to work on the family farm.

In his early years, Floyd worked at the Warroad Fishery and drove milk truck around the Warroad area.

On October 13, 1956 Floyd met Mary Ann Tesarek in Roseau. On May 4, 1957 the two were united in marriage at Zion Lutheran Church, Warroad, MN. To this union 3 children were born. The family first lived near Warroad for a couple of years, then his work in logging led them to International Falls and then on to Two Harbors, MN. In the spring of 1970 they purchased a farm near Holt, MN where they operated a dairy farm. Floyd also drove semitruck in the early 1970's. He retired in 1999 and then went to work for Lunke Farms seasonally for a few years.

Floyd and Mary were known for their old-time dancing and how they glided across the floor together on Saturday nights. Some of his favorite pastimes were bird watching, going to the casino, watching Westerns while drinking a tasty Windsor/coke, hunting, fishing, fishing and more fishing. He was especially devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren and perfected his practical jokes on them. There weren't many people who were not touched by his humor and wit, and he usually left them laughing.

Floyd can also be described as quiet, content, humble and hard working.
