State Math League Results
GMR Senior Ryan Hlucny competed in the State Math League Tournament on March 8th and March 15th. The invitational event was held on March 8th for the top students in each division and the top 50 students in the state. There were a total of 73 participants in the invitational. The invitational event consists of 14 total questions, 8 of which are considered easy questions worth 1 point each, followed by 4 hard questions worth 2 points each, followed by 2 challenge questions worth 4 points each for a total of 24 points. The questions range from all topics of math league so participants have to be prepared for all types of questions from Algebra to Geometry to Statistics to Trigonometry. Ryan scored 10 points on the invitational event, which was the best score he has gotten in the last 4 years on the invitational. Out of the 73 students that took the invitational event, Ryan placed 54th.
The rest of the tournament was held on March 15th which included the Math Bowl and the Team Tournament. The top ten students who score the highest on the invitational event are invited to compete in the 8 question Math Bowl. They are given one question at a time, with a time limit from 30 seconds to 2 minutes and all but one question was no calculator. The winner of the Math Bowl this year was Linden Lee, a 10th grader from Mounds View High school who correctly answered 6 out of the 8 questions.
The team portion of the tournament is the same format as the regular season meets and the questions consist of various topics from each event from the entire season of math league. Ryan participated in Events B (Geometry) and D (Advanced Algebra). He scored 3 points in each event for a total of 6 more points. There were a lot of technical difficulties throughout the morning that we had to deal with so I am unable to see how Ryan ranked overall with the 300+ students competing at the tournament today. Overall, it was a challenging but fun tournament!
