Roseau Couple Provides Critical Service to Veterans

Roseau natives Jerald and Elisabeth Knutson take the word “dedication” to a new level. Jerald is the current Commander of the Roseau/Middle River Chapter 41 of Minnesota Disabled American Veterans, and Elisabeth serves as the Chapter Adjutant. Although this is one of the newest Minnesota DAV chapters, they have already truly embodied the DAV’s mission; to better the lives of Minnesota’s disabled veterans and their families.

With very limited public transportation in Northern Minnesota Chapter 41 has been operating their own transportation program that provides free rides for veterans to get to their VA and VA-scheduled medical appointments. This service is essential to veterans who otherwise may not be able to receive needed medical treatment. The chapter currently has two vehicles, one of which is a side-loading wheelchair van.

Within a three-week period, two of the chapter’s main drivers both had to leave the program due to severe medical problems. Jerald and Elisabeth immediately stepped in and have almost single-handedly taken over the program. Within the first eight working days of the year, Jerald drove more than 1,500 miles transporting veterans.
