Jeans and Sweatshirts find a new Purpose

Willard Sorter picked up where his friend Lucille Underdahl left off in 2002. He had watched and admired her beautiful quilting work for many years and thought the tradition should carry on.

His quilts are designed with denim squares on the front and sweatshirt squares on the back, all tied in red. His quilts are always an interesting design with a variety of denim pockets and sweatshirt logos and designs.

He has benefited from generous people donating a wide array of clothing that he cuts into 9x12 squares to begin the process. As of last count he has cut 31,556 blocks which has produced many beautiful quilts. Whatever clothing remains unused is donated to the Legion Veteran Clothing container or the Northland Rescue Mission.

He is a member of the First Lutheran quilters team who assist in tying the quilt tops. He and team member Janyce Peterson obtain the sheets that are used for quilt backing of the church quilts and Janyce dyes the sheet and cuts the squares for Willard to sew.
