Breathing New Life into a Beloved Middle River Building

THE PAST:

The Goose Capital of Minnesota was dealt a harsh blow on May 7, 2018, when the Greenbush-Middle River School Board voted 5-2 to close the Middle River School Building by no later than the start of the 2018-19 school year due to declining enrollment in the school district. The Middle River School had been the heart of the community for almost 70 years as it provided a place for residents to come together to cheer for the local sports teams, honor veterans at the annual Memorial Day Services, host the Miss Middle River and Miss North Star Pageants and provide a venue for the Annual Goose Festival activities. In addition, the pageants provide young women with opportunities to earn scholarships while developing their confidence in public speaking and identifying platforms that they can promote in their local communities. And most importantly, these walls have provided an educational background for hundreds of students, giving them not only reading, writing, and arithmetic skills, but a forever connection that would become for them “home.”
