Janice Schindler

The spirit of Jan will live long in the hearts of all those she loved and helped. Jan peacefully passed on April 4, 2025. Born in Minnesota in 1938, the daughter of Alma and Robert Haenke. She was the oldest of five, followed by Robert Jr., William, Michael, and Janet. They grew up in Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, and various locations in southern California.
Jan was an artist and horse woman. She performed in many horse shows and parades. She married Clayton Ferrero and had a son, Casey. Later, she moved to Michigan to care for an aunt and met Jim Riske. They farmed and ranched in Michigan and Minnesota and had a son, Erik. She became a real estate agent, selling homes and farms in a three-county region. She later moved to Washington to be closer to family, where she continued her real estate career in Centralia, Washington.
Jan was always looking for the next adventure, so she traveled the world, exploring cultures and environments. When she married Richard Schindler, they sold their properties and moved to Arizona. They made new friends there, soaked up the sun, and rallied for their political beliefs. Following Dick’s passing she moved back to Chehalis, Washington and lived in Woodland Village where her and Pablo (her loyal dog) met new friends and reconnected with old friends and family.
When Jan and Jim lived in this area, they ran a small horse and cattle ranch southwest of town in Spruce Valley township. Jan made many friends here. She was instrumental in starting North Country Horsemen, and was elected its first president. She was also helpful in writing the grant to facilitate building the Spruce Valley Community building. Jan was part of planning the very first Goose Festival 50 years ago. Her final travel adventure was a much enjoyed trip from Washington state to Middle River to attend the 50th Anniversary of Goose Festival and act as one of the Grand Marshals for the parade. She enjoyed catching up with many friends.
Jan is survived by her immediate family son Casey Riske and his spouse Cecilia Matta. Son Erik Riske, his spouse Kathy Riske, and their son Paden Riske.
