Ryan Hlucny Heads to the State Math League Tournament

The Greenbush-Middle River Math League team recently completed their competition season with a very commendable third place finish in the Division. Senior team member, Ryan Hlucny, placed first in the Division for the individual portion of the competition, ending with 54 points and a power ranking score of 93.012. This qualifies him for State Math League Competition as an individual which will be held on March 8. Ryan has finished first in the Division since 9th grade so this will be his fourth state tournament outing.

In the final meet of the season on February 8, Ryan received 10/14 points which was the highest in the division and fairly high score in the state. He moved his ranking from 46 to 45 in that final meet. In order to qualify as an individual for the state tournament a student must either be ranked first in their division, be ranked in the top 50, or just be a top state student. Ryan ranked BOTH first in the division and in the top 50! Ryan says, “I have been working toward a top 50 ranking for four years of my high school. I’m so happy now that I’ve finally ranked in the top 50 because it shows that I can compete with the students in the cities.”

Math League competition is quite new to our area schools and Coach Tara Kern has done a great job not only coaching these math students, but also keeping the public posted on their competition results. But let’s be honest -- the average person does not really understand how a competition event looks. So when Ryan was asked about the state tournament, he was ecstatic to share the state format.
