Rankin Family Homesteading

In the year 1900, the Joseph Rankin family settled in the northeastern section of Como Township. They, like so many others of the time period, had first attempted grain farming in western Marshall County. This was a flop for the majority of homesteaders, so people started flocking to our area of the county, where homesteading land was free, and the native grasses were great fodder for livestock.
