Olympic Medal Winner visits with the Gators

The Gator Wrestling Team & Coaches got a pleasant surprise on Monday, January 27, when John Peterson stopped by the wrestling room and visited with them. Who is John Peterson? He is an Olympic Freestyle Wrestling champion from the 1970s.

John comes from the small Wisconsin town of Comstock. He has one sister and four brothers, one of whom also participated in the Olympics with John. In fact, they both lost to the same Russian wrestler when they won their silver medals!

In 1972, John won the Silver medal in Munich, Germany, with his brother winning the Gold. Then in 1976 John won the Gold in Montreal, Canada and his brother Ben won the Silver. John also won the Bronze medal at the World Championship in Mexico in 1978 and in 1979 he won the Silver medal in San Diego. That’s a lot of metal!
