Install plastic tree wrap around the trunks of thin-barked trees to protect the bark from frost cracks caused by the bark splitting from intense winter sun and from rodent damage. Hardware cloth (minimum 4’ tall) fencing will also protect trees from rabbits, voles and other animals that can girdle trees by eating tender bark. Screen evergreens, particularly exposed broadleaved types, from drying winter wind and sun by setting up burlap screens or shade cloth shelters.
